RALLYING SUPPORT: The Catskills Renewable Connector, a project that would plug a transmission line carrying renewables into the site of retiring fossil fuel plants, has clinched support from New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. “As we work to transform and revitalize our power grid citywide, it’s critical to prioritize racial equity in renewable energy, and the Catskills Renewable Connector would be an essential component of a renewed New York,” Williams said in a statement. “We cannot choose between economic and environmental justice — advancing our city means advancing these principles together, and this project is a great example.” Developers of transmission lines competing for Tier 4 subsidies from NYSERDA are seeking to build public support for their projects ahead of awards expected in the third quarter. Any contracts will be subject to review by the Public Service Commission. Bringing renewable energy into New York City is seen as key for reducing the reliance of the city’s grid on fossil fuel plants and achieving the state’s clean energy and emission reduction goals. — Marie J.
